After months of research, ordering, pickup, and preparation, we finally got our Solar Strela 490 and Mercury 60/40 jet on the water.

Like most first outings with new equipment, the day was a mix of excitement, learning, troubleshooting, and building confidence in the setup.

Fortunately, things ended well, and we learned several valuable lessons that may help other inflatable boat owners.


The Goal of the First Trip

The primary objective wasn’t fishing, hunting, or exploring.

The goal was simple:

Complete the initial break-in procedure for the motor.

For the Mercury 60/40 jet, the break-in process is important and requires following a specific schedule.

The first hour consists of:

  • Variable speeds
  • No more than half throttle

The second hour consists of:

  • Variable speeds
  • No more than three-quarter throttle
  • Full throttle for one minute every ten minutes
  • Repeated six times

The purpose is to gradually introduce the motor to increasing loads while allowing components to seat properly.

Not the most exciting boating day, but an important one.


An Unexpected Problem

During the second hour of break-in, we began noticing something concerning.

As the throttle approached the upper range, the jet appeared to be cavitating.

The engine would rev, but performance wasn’t what we expected.

As a new boat owner, this immediately got my attention.

Nobody wants to hear an engine revving without producing the expected thrust.

At first, we weren’t sure what was causing it.

Was it normal?

Was it a jet issue?

Was it operator error?

Fortunately, we stopped and started investigating before simply continuing to run it.


The Culprit: An Underinflated Floor

After doing some research, we discovered that underinflation can contribute to performance issues in inflatable boats.

The challenge was that we already had a pressure gauge.

The problem was that the gauge wasn’t reading accurately.

After checking pressure with an alternative method, we discovered the floor was significantly underinflated.

The recommended floor pressure for the boat is:

4.5 PSI

Once we inflated the floor to the proper pressure, everything changed.

The cavitation disappeared.

Performance improved immediately.

And the boat behaved exactly how we expected it to.


The Difference Was Dramatic

Once properly inflated, the boat absolutely came alive.

With:

  • My wife
  • Myself
  • A cooler
  • Three dogs

The boat jumped on step effortlessly.

That was the moment where things started to click.

The setup felt balanced.

The motor felt strong.

And the performance finally matched what we had hoped for when purchasing the boat.


Finishing the Break-In

After completing the first two hours, the most restrictive portion of the break-in process was finished.

From there, Mercury’s recommendations become much simpler.

The next step is:

  • Operate normally for the next ten hours
  • Do not exceed full throttle for more than five minutes at a time

Once the ten-hour mark is reached:

  • Oil change
  • Inspection
  • Break-in complete

At that point, we’ll finally be able to start evaluating the boat without worrying about break-in limitations.


Lessons Learned

One thing became clear very quickly:

Inflation pressure matters.

A lot.

Coming from a background without much inflatable boat ownership, it would have been easy to underestimate how important proper inflation is.

The difference between underinflated and properly inflated was immediately noticeable.

It’s something we’ll be paying much closer attention to moving forward.


New Additions After the First Trip

Like most new owners, our first outing immediately highlighted a few items we wanted to add to the setup.


Jet Medic Tool

One of the first purchases was a Jet Medic tool.

If you’ve spent time around jet boats, you’ve probably heard stories about debris finding its way into the intake.

The Jet Medic provides a simple way to help clear obstructions without turning a minor inconvenience into a major problem.

Hopefully it doesn’t get used often, but it’s cheap insurance.


OutdoorMaster Shark 3 Pump

We also purchased an OutdoorMaster Shark 3 rechargeable electric pump.

One of the features that appealed to us was the ability to set a desired pressure and allow the pump to automatically inflate to that target.

This is especially useful because inflatable boats should not be trailered at their fully inflated operating pressure.

As temperatures change and the boat sits in the sun, pressures can increase significantly.

Being able to quickly top off the chambers at the launch ramp helps ensure we’re operating at the proper pressures every trip.

After our first experience with the underinflated floor, this purchase became even easier to justify.


Boat Tool Kit

We also put together a dedicated boat tool kit.

Current contents include:

  • Channel locks
  • Screwdrivers
  • Needle-nose vise grips
  • Quicksilver Lubrimatic plunger grease gun

The grease gun deserves special mention.

One of the maintenance habits emphasized during pickup was greasing the motor after every use.

Having a dedicated grease gun on hand makes that process quick and easy.


303 Marine Protectant

We also added 303 Marine Protectant.

Inflatable boats spend a lot of time exposed to UV radiation.

Protecting the material from long-term sun exposure is a simple preventative measure that can help extend the life of the boat.


First Impressions So Far

It’s still far too early to provide a comprehensive review.

We’ve barely scratched the surface of what this boat is capable of.

That said, our initial impressions are positive.

The boat:

  • Feels larger than expected
  • Carries weight well
  • Performs impressively when properly inflated
  • Has reinforced confidence in our purchasing decision

Most importantly, the first trip taught us valuable lessons that will make future trips smoother.


What Comes Next

The break-in process isn’t finished yet.

We still have several hours to put on the motor before completing the first service.

Once that’s done, the real testing begins.

Upcoming goals include:

  • Additional river time
  • Load testing
  • Hunting applications
  • Fishing trips
  • Exploring shallow-water performance

Those experiences will ultimately determine whether the Solar Strela 490 lives up to the expectations that led us to buy it.

So far, things are off to a very promising start.
