A few months ago, I wrote about the challenges of finding quality women’s hunting pants.
At the time, we were still in the testing phase.
We had tried numerous options from both hunting and hiking brands and kept running into the same issues: fit, comfort, durability, mobility, and finding something that could handle demanding backcountry use.
Over the past two months, we’ve spent more time in the Born Primitive pants and have started to form some early impressions.
While we still have a major sheep hunt coming up this August that will provide a much more rigorous testing environment, we’ve already learned enough to provide an honest update.
Why We Were Looking in the First Place
The goal was never to find a pair of pants that simply looked good in a catalog.
We needed something that could realistically handle:
- Day hikes
- Backpack hunting
- Mountain terrain
- Variable weather
- Long days under load
In Alaska, gear has a way of exposing weaknesses quickly.
Something that works for a casual afternoon hike may fall apart once you start climbing mountains, carrying weight, and spending consecutive days in the field.
That was the standard we were trying to meet.
Two Months In: First Impressions
After several hikes and general use, our overall impression has been very positive.
The pants have exceeded expectations in several areas and, at least so far, have become the leading contender among the options we’ve tested.
The areas that have stood out most are:
- Fit
- Flexibility
- Pocket layout
- Weather resistance
Fit
Fit was one of the biggest concerns going into this process.
One of the challenges with women’s outdoor apparel is that sizing can vary dramatically between brands.
What fits well in one company may fit completely differently in another.
So far, the Born Primitive pants have provided the best overall fit we’ve found.
The cut feels functional rather than restrictive, and movement hasn’t been an issue during hiking or general outdoor use.
Mobility and Flexibility
This is an area where the pants have really impressed us.
Climbing, stepping over obstacles, and moving through uneven terrain all require gear that moves with you rather than fighting against you.
Compared to some of the other options we’ve tested, the Born Primitive pants have offered noticeably better flexibility while still maintaining a durable feel.
That’s a difficult balance to achieve.
Pockets and Practicality
One thing that often gets overlooked in reviews is pocket design.
A good pocket layout can make a surprising difference during long days outdoors.
The pocket placement on these pants has been practical and easy to use without feeling excessive or bulky.
It’s a small detail, but it’s one that contributes to overall usability.
Weather Resistance
So far, the pants have also performed well in wet conditions.
No hunting pant is a substitute for dedicated rain gear, but for light moisture, wet vegetation, and changing weather conditions, they’ve performed better than we expected.
In this category, they’ve also outperformed the other options we’ve tested.
Comparing Them to Prana and Kuiu
Before trying the Born Primitive pants, two of the better options we’d found were Prana and Kuiu.
Both have strengths.
We’ve had good experiences with Prana hiking pants, and Kuiu has offered some of the better hunting-specific women’s options we’ve found.
However, after two months of use, the Born Primitive pants have become the clear favorite.
Compared to both the Prana and Kuiu options we’ve used, the Born Primitive pants have provided:
- Better fit
- Better flexibility
- Better pocket design
- Better resistance to moisture
That’s a strong statement considering those were previously our preferred options.
What We Still Don’t Know
As positive as our experience has been, this is not a final review.
The true test is still ahead.
This August, these pants will be going on a sheep hunt.
That environment will challenge every aspect of the design:
- Steep terrain
- Heavy mileage
- Repeated use
- Variable weather
- Extended days in the mountains
Those conditions reveal things that short hikes simply cannot.
Durability, comfort under load, long-term fit, and overall performance will all be evaluated at a much higher level.
Would We Recommend Them Right Now?
Yes.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, these are the pants we would currently recommend to women looking for a versatile hunting pant.
That recommendation comes with an important caveat:
This is still an early review.
We haven’t yet put them through the type of abuse that a multi-day mountain hunt provides.
But after two months of use, they have performed well enough that we are optimistic about what comes next.
Final Thoughts
One of the themes that keeps coming up in outdoor gear is that there is rarely a perfect solution.
There are simply options that fit your needs better than others.
At the moment, the Born Primitive pants are the most promising women’s hunting pant we’ve tested.
They fit well.
They move well.
They handle moisture well.
And they have outperformed both the Prana and Kuiu options we’ve used previously.
Whether they maintain that lead after a sheep hunt remains to be seen.
We’ll find out soon enough.
